SHAH ALAM: Asmalia Filzati Redzuan only took up swimming because her brother was involved in the sport.
Now, she’s in the national team.
The teenager proved her potential when she gave hosts Selangor a fantastic start in the MSSM (national schools) swimming championships by setting a new meet record en route to winning the girls’ 200m freestyle event in the 16-18 category at the Shah Alam Aquatic Centre on Sunday.
Asmalia, who will turn 16 on July 18, clocked 2:09.22 to better the 2:09.51 done by Lai Wei Li of Sabah in 2009.
Penang’s Andreanne Soon (2:16.80) took silver and Kuala Lumpur’s Yap Li Wen (2:16.89) the bronze.
Asmalia went on to bag a second gold in the 800m freestyle Open, clocking 9:28.27. Her team-mate Rosalind Pang (9:40.02) took silver and Johor’s Ong Yong Qi (10:00.06) the bronze.
The tudung-clad Asmalia was delighted to be the only record-breaker in the girls’ division yesterday.
Asmalia, who joined the national team under Australian coach Paul Birmingham last year, is hoping to be picked for the SEA Games in Singapore in June.
“The time I did today in the 200m freestyle is not my best. I’ve done 2:08 before ... but I’m happy,” said Asmalia.
“I’ll try to do well in the Malaysian Open next week as it will decide whether I get to go for the SEA Games.”
It was 10 years ago that the Klang-born Asmalia first decided to get into the pool.
“My brother used to come here to swim and I started to develop an interest when I was only six. I’m the youngest in my family of four ... and the only one to have come this far,” said Asmalia, who prefers the long distance and butterfly events.
Two meet records were also set in the boys’ section by Nee Gui Ping (50m butterfly in the 13-15 age category) and Foong Wei Tze (50m breaststroke in the 16-18 age category).
Sarawak’s Gui Ping clocked 26.84 to break Kuala Lumpur Ian James Barr’s mark of 26.99 set in 2010 while Malacca’s Wei Tze clocked 29.71 to erase Tang Chong Heng’s record of 29.91 set last year.

Swimmer Siew Hui’s Got Bigger Fish To Catch

SHAH ALAM: Hosts Selangor will be counting on Yap Siew Hui for glory in the girls’ Under-18 category of the MSSM (national schools swimming) championships here on Sunday – but she has bigger goals to chase.
With this year’s SEA Games in Singapore being brought forward to June from the customary year end, the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) have been forced to move the Malaysian Open swimming meet to an earlier date to accommodate swimmers trying to qualify on merit.
The Malaysia Open is also a qualifying meet for the World Championships in Kazan in July.
It’s not really hard to see where the priority lies for the 17-year-old Siew Hui, who won the MSSM overall best female athlete award last year.
Siew Hui, who excels in the butterfly events, has scaled down on the events she will swim in the Under-18 category of the MSSM this year as it’s too close to the Malaysian Open (from March 26-29).
“The Malaysian Open will take place a week (after the MSSM) and I will not be at my best if I were to swim in so many events like before (in the MSSM).
“I swam in eight or nine events previously, but I’ll only do five this time as national coach Paul (Birmingham) wants us to focus on the Malaysian Open this time.
“I’m representing my state and I’ll definitely try my best to set new records (in the MSSM),” said Siew Hui, who won a silver and a bronze at the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing two years ago.
Siew Hui boasts personal bests of 27.54 in the 50m butterfly and 1:01.71 in the 100m butterfly.
“My dream is to qualify and swim at the world meet. I’ve yet to qualify for the world meet and I think I might have a shot at it in the 50m butterfly,” she said.
“The qualifying time for 50m butterfly at the world meet is 27.47 ... that’s not far from my personal best.”
Hosts Selangor are the defending champions in the MSSM aquatics meet but they can expect stiff challenges from the likes of Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur, who finished overall runners-up last year.
Sarawak will surely miss the absence of Welson Sim. The MSSM overall best male athlete is not eligible to compete this time around.

Versatile Jun Hoong Splashes For Silver With Mun Yee In Diving World Series

PETALING JAYA: It certainly pays to be versatile.
Cheong Jun Hoong showed her versatility by partnering veteran Leong Mun Yee to a silver medal in the women’s 10m platform synchro in the opening round of the FINA Diving World Series in Beijing.
The pair can also thank their lucky stars as they were out of the medal contention, having slipped to fourth with just one dive to go.
The duo, who scored only 66.24 points in their fourth dive, produced an outstanding final attempt of 80.64 to be guaranteed of the silver as Australians Lara Tarvit-Melissa Wu finished out of the medals instead.
Jun Hoong-Mun Yee, who are both from Ipoh, ended the five-dive contest with a 320.28-total to finish behind Chen Ruolin-Liu Huixia, who retained China’s perfect record in the event with 345.36 points.
Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito-Roseline Filion, the gold medallists at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games last year, amassed 310.86 points for the bronze as the Australian pair settled for fourth with 302.10 points.
This is the second medal for Jun Hoong in the 10m platform synchro at the Diving World Series. She partnered Pandelela Rinong to a bronze in the 10m platform synchro in the Mexican leg in Monterrey last year.
Jun Hoong proved to be a good replacement in the World Cup in Shanghai last year when Mun Yee’s regular partner, Pandelela, was rested to allow her to fully recover from the knee injury in time for the Commonwealth Games (last July) and Asian Games in Incheon (last September).  Jun Hoong capped a stunning outing with Mun Yee to take silver in the 10m platform synchro for Malaysia's best ever-achievement in the World Cup.
Coach Yang Zhuliang was happy with the progress shown by Jun Hoong.
“She’s normally focused on the 3m individual springboard ... we now have another candidate for the 10m platform synchro,” said Zhuliang from Beijing.
“Having more options is good ... I think it’s a healthy situation before we compete in the World Championships in Russia in July.
“I’m happy they got the better of the Canadian pair, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games last year. Mun Yee-Jun Hoong were only fourth in 10m platform synchro at the Games.”
Jun Hoong will bid to qualify for the 3m individual springboard today while Pandelela will swing into action in her pet event – the individual 10m platform – Saturday.
