MALACCA: Amid the flood of new talents making big splashes at the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships in Malacca, a bustling and busy Kuala Lumpur quartet emerged with a rare double of having completed a medley relay in the same order in two consecutive age groups.

Khiew Hoe Yan kicked off the relay with the backstroke leg, then Lee Jia Jing took the breastroke leg, Koh Teck Chen the butterfly and Zachary Lim rounded off the under-15 4x100m medley relay in for the quartet to come within a whisker of wiping out the meet record of 4:09.82s set by a Daniel Bego-powered Sarawak quartet six years ago. 

They had set 4:10.91s, but that did not matter. What mattered was they had completed a second gold medal in the same relay sequence as they did in the under-12 category four years ago, a rarity in a sport where relay squads change with virtually every meet.

"We're from different schools but with the same heart!" exclaimed Khiew, who with Zachary attends the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur.

"Not only that, we train with different coaches!" Teck Chen, who goes to the Sri Sentosa Secondary School adds. 

"But we meet each time there are swimming meets such as these and we are good friends."

Lee goes to the Taylors International School Kuala Lumpur (TISKL) and says their friendship also drives them to perform well together.

"We used to train under the same coach five years ago, when we started swimming for Kuala Lumpur. But then the coach left and we have our own coaches. But when meets like these come up, we are always together and we have a strong team spirit," said Lee.

Their next aim will definitely be to complete the rarest of feats in the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships, the treble by clinching the under-18 category 4x100m medley gold, which could be possible within the next three years.

Meanwhile, the home favourite, Malacca's newfound sensation Low Zheng Yong, 14, today romped to his sixth gold medal after bagging the under-15 200m breaststroke gold, while he also moved up a category to give Selangor's Sebastian Soon a run for his money in the under-18 400m individual medley.

Zheng Yong finished second in 4:50.21s, 10 seconds adrift of the 16-year old Soon who bagged the gold medal in meet record time of 4:40.47s.

In the girls' section, Selangor's Nadia Adrianna Redza put on a show of true endurance by bagging three middle distance golds to bring her tally to four gold medals.

She started off by taking the 200m breaststroke gold, before totally dominating the field to take the 400m individual medley gold and then combined with Rosalind Pang, Liew Chern Xin and Fatin Amira Ahmad Hadri to take the 4x100m medley gold medal for Selangor.

MALACCA: Low Zheng Yong emerged as the star performer again for hosts Malacca as Selangor inched closer to a successful defence of their overall title in the MSSM (national schools) Swimming Championships.

The 14-year-old added another meet record to his name when he won the boys’ Under-15 200m individual medley gold at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Zheng Yong clocked 2:14.73 to equal Selangor’s Sebastian Soon’s record set in last year’s championships.

It was Zheng Yong’s fifth gold and his second meet record, having smashed Sarawakian Daniel Bego’s 13-year-old 100m butterfly mark on Monday.

Zheng Yong, a student at SMJK Yok Bin, had earlier won the 50m and 100m butterfly as well as the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

It was, however, not a good day for Selangor’s Rosalind Pang as she failed to add to her four-gold tally in the girls’ Under-18 category. She could only manage three silvers yesterday.

The 16-year-old lost to Penang’s Elynn Tan in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle and team-mate Nadia Adrianna Redza in the 200m individual medley. 

Selangor still lead the overall standings with a 23-18-14 haul after three days of competition.

Penang are a distant second on 10-10-7 followed by Kuala Lumpur (9-14-16) and Malacca (9-4-2).

KUALA LUMPUR: Low Zheng Yong of Malacca made a huge impact in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming meet by breaking a 13-year-old meet record at Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca today.

The 14-year-old swimmer posted 58.78 to smash Daniel Bego's record of 59.09 to win the boys' Under-15 100m butterfly event. 

Zheng Yong also won the 100m breaststroke discipline in 1:10.66. His time was not far off the meet record of 1:08.14 held by Tan Chong Heng of Sarawak since 2012. 

Kuala Lumpur's Khiew Hoe Yean was the second swimmer to set a new meet record today. He did so in the boys' Under-15 200m backstroke event by clocking 2:10.91. The previous record of 2:10.97 was set by Ian James Barr in 2010.

Selangor still lead the standing with a haul of 17 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze, followed by Malacca (8-2-1), KL (6-9-12) and Penang (5-9-4).

(Swimming) Versatile Zheng Yong cracks 13-year-old MSSM swimming record

MALACCA: Low Zheng Yong earned cheers for hosts Malacca by breaking a 13-year-old meet record en route to a double splash at the MSSM (national schools) Swimming Championships.

The 14-year-old posted 58.78 at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday to win the boys’ Under-15 100m butterfly final. In the process, Zheng Yong erased the previous meet record of 59.09 set by former multiple SEA Games gold medallist Daniel Bego of Sarawak.

Koh Teck Chen of Kuala Lumpur took the silver in 59.74 while Johor’s Nicholas Gan, who clocked 1:01.85, bagged the bronze.

Zheng Yong also showed his versatility by winning the 100m breaststroke in 1:10.66, which was not far off the meet record of 1:08.14 set by Sarawakian Tan Chong Heng in 2012.
Toh Ting Wei of Penang clocked 1:11.81 for the silver. Ong Yi Kao earned the bronze for Selangor with a time of 1:12.01.

“It’s OK. I will try to break the record next year. I’m still young and want to improve my strokes,” said Zheng Yong, whose idol is American legend Michael Phelps.

Zheng Yong, a student at SMJK Yok Bin, now has four golds in the bag after two days of competition. He won the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke on Sunday.

Kuala Lumpur also celebrated with Khiew Hoe Yean posting a new meet record in the boys’ Under-15 200m backstroke.

The 14-year-old clocked 2:10.91 to dip under the previous mark of 2:10.97 set by fellow KL swimmer Ian James Barr in 2010.

Malacca’s Ng Yee Sheng snatched the silver in 2:21.39 ahead of another KL swimmer Chung Ze Xuan who finished in 2:22.70.

Selangor still lead comfortably in the chase to be overall champions with a 17-13-7 haul. Malacca are second on 8-2-1 followed by KL (6-9-12) and Penang (5-9-4).

MALACCA: Rosalind Pang won three of nine gold medals for Selangor on the opening day of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming meet at the Hang Jebat Aquatics Centre here today.

The 16-year-old edged Johor's Ong Yong Qi for the girls' 800m freestyle open gold by clocking 9:44.04.

Yong Qi took second in 9:45.86, followed by Kuala Lumpur's Geogene Wee (9:54.95).

Rosalind then clinched the under-18 100m backstroke event in 1:08.39, ahead of two Kuala Lumpur swimmers – Karla Lim (1:09.74) and Nurlatifa Zahra (1:12.28).

The reigning Malaysia Games champion completed the day with a third gold in the 200m freestyle event, with 2:14.85.

Penang's Elynn Tan finished second in 2:16.10, while Sabah's Lo Meng Sum won the bronze with 2:16.69.

Selangor’s Rosalind Makes A Splash With Three Golds

MALACCA: Rosalind Pang splashed to three golds to give defending champions Selangor a superb start at the MSSM (national schools) Swimming Championships here.

The 16-year-old held off Johor’s Ong Yong Qi in the last lap to win the girls’ 800m freestyle Open in 9:44.04 at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Yong Qi clocked 9:45.86 for the silver ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Geogene Wee who finished in 9:54.95.

Rosalind still had enough energy to clinch her second gold in the Under-18 100m backstroke. She came out tops in 1:08.39 ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Karla Lim (1:09.74) and Nurlatifa Zahra (1:12.28).

Rosalind returned to the pool shortly after to take her third gold in the Under-18 200m freestyle. She clocked 2:14.85. Penang’s Elynn Tan secured the silver with a time of 2:16.10 while Sabahan Lo Meng Sum clocked 2:16.69 for bronze.

“I have six more individual events, so I hope to maintain my form. This is my first year in the 16-18 age-group and I’m focusing more on the longer distance races,” said Rosalind, who bagged eight golds for Selangor in the Under-15 category last year.

Hosts Malacca also rejoiced with four golds on the opening day.

Low Zheng Yong contributed two golds, winning the 50m butterfly (27.04) and 50m breaststroke (31.81) in the boys’ Under-15 category.

The others came from R. Parvin in the boys’ Under-18 50m butterfly (26.99) and Goh Chia Tong in the girls’ Under-15 100m backstroke (1:09.20).
