MALACCA: Amid the flood of new talents making big splashes at the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships in Malacca, a bustling and busy Kuala Lumpur quartet emerged with a rare double of having completed a medley relay in the same order in two consecutive age groups.

Khiew Hoe Yan kicked off the relay with the backstroke leg, then Lee Jia Jing took the breastroke leg, Koh Teck Chen the butterfly and Zachary Lim rounded off the under-15 4x100m medley relay in for the quartet to come within a whisker of wiping out the meet record of 4:09.82s set by a Daniel Bego-powered Sarawak quartet six years ago. 

They had set 4:10.91s, but that did not matter. What mattered was they had completed a second gold medal in the same relay sequence as they did in the under-12 category four years ago, a rarity in a sport where relay squads change with virtually every meet.

"We're from different schools but with the same heart!" exclaimed Khiew, who with Zachary attends the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur.

"Not only that, we train with different coaches!" Teck Chen, who goes to the Sri Sentosa Secondary School adds. 

"But we meet each time there are swimming meets such as these and we are good friends."

Lee goes to the Taylors International School Kuala Lumpur (TISKL) and says their friendship also drives them to perform well together.

"We used to train under the same coach five years ago, when we started swimming for Kuala Lumpur. But then the coach left and we have our own coaches. But when meets like these come up, we are always together and we have a strong team spirit," said Lee.

Their next aim will definitely be to complete the rarest of feats in the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships, the treble by clinching the under-18 category 4x100m medley gold, which could be possible within the next three years.

Meanwhile, the home favourite, Malacca's newfound sensation Low Zheng Yong, 14, today romped to his sixth gold medal after bagging the under-15 200m breaststroke gold, while he also moved up a category to give Selangor's Sebastian Soon a run for his money in the under-18 400m individual medley.

Zheng Yong finished second in 4:50.21s, 10 seconds adrift of the 16-year old Soon who bagged the gold medal in meet record time of 4:40.47s.

In the girls' section, Selangor's Nadia Adrianna Redza put on a show of true endurance by bagging three middle distance golds to bring her tally to four gold medals.

She started off by taking the 200m breaststroke gold, before totally dominating the field to take the 400m individual medley gold and then combined with Rosalind Pang, Liew Chern Xin and Fatin Amira Ahmad Hadri to take the 4x100m medley gold medal for Selangor.

KUALA LUMPUR: Low Zheng Yong of Malacca made a huge impact in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming meet by breaking a 13-year-old meet record at Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca today.

The 14-year-old swimmer posted 58.78 to smash Daniel Bego's record of 59.09 to win the boys' Under-15 100m butterfly event. 

Zheng Yong also won the 100m breaststroke discipline in 1:10.66. His time was not far off the meet record of 1:08.14 held by Tan Chong Heng of Sarawak since 2012. 

Kuala Lumpur's Khiew Hoe Yean was the second swimmer to set a new meet record today. He did so in the boys' Under-15 200m backstroke event by clocking 2:10.91. The previous record of 2:10.97 was set by Ian James Barr in 2010.

Selangor still lead the standing with a haul of 17 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze, followed by Malacca (8-2-1), KL (6-9-12) and Penang (5-9-4).

MALACCA: Rosalind Pang won three of nine gold medals for Selangor on the opening day of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming meet at the Hang Jebat Aquatics Centre here today.

The 16-year-old edged Johor's Ong Yong Qi for the girls' 800m freestyle open gold by clocking 9:44.04.

Yong Qi took second in 9:45.86, followed by Kuala Lumpur's Geogene Wee (9:54.95).

Rosalind then clinched the under-18 100m backstroke event in 1:08.39, ahead of two Kuala Lumpur swimmers – Karla Lim (1:09.74) and Nurlatifa Zahra (1:12.28).

The reigning Malaysia Games champion completed the day with a third gold in the 200m freestyle event, with 2:14.85.

Penang's Elynn Tan finished second in 2:16.10, while Sabah's Lo Meng Sum won the bronze with 2:16.69.

18-year-old Welson Smashes National Record To Qualify For Rio Olympics

(File pix) The 18-year-old Welson Sim is the first Malaysian swimmer to dip under the Olympic A time of 3:50.40 achieved at the very same venue where he won his first Sea Games gold medal in the same event last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: Welson Sim made history when the swimmer met the 'A' time for the Rio Olympic Games in the men's 400m freestyle at the Singapore national age-group swimming met at OCBC Aquatic Centre today. 

Welson smashed his national record of 3:52.83 set at the World Cup in Doha last November en route to winning the final with 3:50.33. The 18-year-old is the first Malaysian swimmer to dip under the Olympic A time of 3:50.40 achieved at the very same venue where he won his first Sea Games gold medal in the same event last year. 

An Ting Yao of Taiwan took silver in 3:55.45 ahead of Singapore's bronze medallist Yeo Kai Quan (4:02.18). The Sarawakian would have taken bronze with his new national record at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. 

National coach Paul Birmingham described Welson's achievement as outstanding. "I am happy with his result. "It's just taken more race practice to get the pacing better," said Birmingham. 

Besides swimming, Malaysia now have qualified for archery, track cycling, diving, shooting and sailing for Rio Olympics.

MSSM: Rosalind Closes On A High

SHAH ALAM: Rosalind Pang of Selangor capped her Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming championships campaign with another two wins to bring her total haul to eight gold on the final day of competition today. 

Despite having to compete against older swimmers, Rosalind bagged the girls under-18 400m freestyle gold in a time of four minutes and 51.06 seconds at the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Complex in Shah Alam. 

The Sri Kuala Lumpur student then teamed up with Shannen Kay Chan, Nessa Yip and Liew Chern Xin to help Selangor win the under-15 100m freestyle relay in 4:18.38s. 

Rosalind had also won eight gold in her final year in the under-12 category in 2013. No records were broken yesterday, though Selangor's Jordan Yip added another two wins in the boys' under-18 200m butterfly (2:13:85s) as well as the 100m freestyle relay (3:39.47s), where he teammed up with Ooi Joo Vern, Khoo Yee Shen and Tan Tsien Ee. 

It brought his haul to a staggering 12 gold. Although Rosalind and Jordan amassed the medals it was not enough to see them claim the best overall swimmer awards, which is based on the ability to break records with older records counting for more. 

Sabah's Janetty J. Fabian took the best female swimmer award. She had broken fellow Sabahan Leung Chii Lin's 13-year-old record en route to winning the under-12 50m backstroke. 

Best male swimmer went to Sebastian Soon of Selangor as he broke Tia'a Faang Der's (Johor) four-year-old record when he won the boys' under-15 200m individual medley. 

As expected, Selangor again emerged the overall champions of the MSSM Aquatics competition, which also includes water polo and diving, with a 63 gold, 35 silver and 16 bronze haul. The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur came in second on 17-20-22 while Malacca were third on 7-9-12.

SELANGOR’S Jordan Yip notched an impressive 10th gold medal on the penultimate day of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming championships on Wednesday.

Jordan looks set to bag the male swimmer of the Games award after winning the Under-18 400m individual medley in a new meet record of four minutes and 43.51 seconds at the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Complex in Shah Alamy, bettering the previous mark of 4:44.73s set by Johor’s Tia’a Faang Der in 2013.

He then went on to win the 50m freestyle in 24.71s and then teamed up with Ng Yi Hao, Ooi Joo Vern and Yee Shen Khoo to give Selangor the 400m medley relay gold on 4:05.84s.

The 17-year-old also bagged the silver in the 200m breaststroke behind Yi Hao, who won in 2:26.00s.

Jordan had earlier in the competition won the 100m butterfly, 100m-200m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 200m IM.

SHAH ALAM: Sebastian Soon of Selangor and Janetty J Fabian of Sabah each smashed a meet record in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Swimming Championships at Darul Ehsan Club today.

Sebastian, 15, clocked 2:14.73 to break a four-year-old record set by national swimmer Tia’a Faang Der by 0.21 seconds to win the boys’ 13-15 200m individual medley event.

 “I did not expect to break the meet record as I have never dipped below 2:16.00 in competitions,” said Sebastian who also won a gold medal in the 50m backstroke race today.

“It is great to break a record and hopefully, it will inspire me to train harder for upcoming international meets.”

Despite his record breaking feat, Sebastian’s spot in the squad for the Malaysia Games in Sarawak later this year is not guaranteed.

“I am not sure whether I will be picked for the Malaysia Games. Selangor have so many good swimmers,” said the Kajang-born Sebastian.

Janetty was the star of the day when she bettered a 13-year-old record in the girls’ Under-12 50m backstroke event.

The 12-year-old clocked 33.95 to break Leung Chii Lin’s mark of 34.12 set in 2003.

“It is my first MSSM gold medal. It is a good start to my career as I want to go far in the sport,” said Janetty, who managed two silver and two bronze in the opening two days.

Janetty, a student of SK (C) Anglo Chinese School in Penampang, is coached by Benjamin Lee.

Jordan Yip of Selangor took his gold medal tally to seven when he won the boys’ 16-18 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley today.

SHAH ALAM: Jordan Yip wants to emulate Kosuke Hagino of Japan in swimming.

Jordan and Hagino have a similarity as both are equally good in the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke disciplines, and the former hopes to be as successful as the Japanese swimmer one day.

 “I want to emulate Hagino in swimming. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics,” said Jordan after clinching two titles in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Swimming Championships at Darul Ehsan Club today.

The 17-year-old won the boys’ 16-18 200m backstroke race in 2:19.11 before clocking 57.18 for the gold medal in the 100m butterfly.

On Sunday, he bagged the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle events.

“It feels good to be back at my best. I want to go far and qualify for the Olympics one day,” said Jordan who took up swimming when he was eight-years-old.

Jordan will compete in the 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley races tomorrow.

Diving GP: Dhabitah Sabri-Cheong Jun Hoong Win Malaysia's 3rd Gold

BUKIT JALIL: Malaysia ended their campaign in the FINA Diving Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur leg with a third gold medal through Cheong Jun Hoong-Nur Dhabitah Sabri in the women’s 10m platform synchro discipline at National Aquatic Centre today.

Jun Hoong-Nur Dhabitah led from the second round onwards for a combined 319.74 total, followed by China’s Wang Han-Wang Ying (283.38) and Ukraine’s Vlada Tatsenko-Ganna Krasnoshlyk (273.33). 

The 16-year-old also won silver medals in the women’s 3m springboard synchro with Jun Hoong and the springboard mixed synchro with Syafiq Puteh.

 “It was a tiring day as I competed in three events. I am glad that I did well and won medals in all disciplines,” said Nur Dhabitah today. 

“Winning the platform synchro gold was a surprise as Jun Hoong and I are only focusing on the springboard in training as we are preparing ourselves for Olympic qualification through the Rio World Cup in February.” 

In the springboard mixed synchro, China’s Wu Chunting-Li Yanan clinched the title on 303.00 ahead of silver medallists Nur Dhabitah-Syafiq (287.70) and Ukraine’s Oleg Kolodiy-Anastasia Nedobiga (287.28). 

China’s Xu Zhihuan-Wu Chunting topped the women’s 3m springboard synchro event with 304.50, followed by Jun Hoong-Nur Dhabitah (288.75) and Ukraine’s Anastasia Nedobiga-Viktoriya Kesar (280.95). 

In the men’s 10m platform final, China finished one-and-two through Wang Anqi (471.85) and Gao Ang (451.70) followed by Norway’s Espen Valheim (396.80) while Chew Yiwei finished fourth on 392.25. 

Malaysia’s other goals were from the men’s springboard synchro (Ahmad Amsyar Azman-Yiwei) and platform mixed synchro (Yiwei-Jun Hoong) events.

SWIMMING: Nadia Powers Selangor

HAT-TRICK: Wins three MSSM gold and sets eyes on Incheon, Glasgow

 SELANGOR'S Nadia Adrianna Redza proved she is a star in the making after breaking two long-standing  records and helping her state to a team gold at    Malaysian Schools Sports Council swimming championships at the Shah Alam Aquatics Complex yesterday.

The 15-year-old lopped more than six seconds off Lew Yih Wey's (Negri Sembilan) mark of five minutes 6.31 seconds in the 400m individual medley girls' Open category, set in 2005, when she powered to victory in a time of 4:58.77s.

She then bettered Christina Loh's (Kuala Lumpur) record of 2:39.40s (2010) in the Under-15 200m breaststroke when she clocked 2:35.75s to clinch gold.

Teaming up with Carynn Kay Chan, Asmalia Filzati Redzuan and Rosalind Pang, she completed a hat-trick of wins on the day as she swam the backstroke leg of the 4x 100m medley relay which Selangor won in 4:35.87s, erasing their own record of 4:35.98s set last year.

Nadia, who started swimming at the age of five, said she was delighted with her performance but stressed that there is always room for improvement.

"It was my goal to break the record in the 400m individual medley (IM) and 200m breaststroke but I did not expect to do so well in the IM," said the International School Kuala Lumpur Student.

"There's still the 400m freestyle for me tomorrow and I am hoping that I can also finish that event on the podium though I expect the competition to be tough."

Nadia, who was drafted into the national elite squad last year, added that she is hoping to translate her fine form into a spot at the Incheon Asian Games and Glasgow Commonwealth Games later this year.

"I went to the Sea Games for the first time in Myanmar. I did not win any medals but I made the finals in all my events. It was a good experience for me.

"I do not specialise in any stroke and am hoping to make the cut for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as my times are not that far off.

"I believe my best chances would be in the 200m breaststroke as well as the 200m and 400m IM events."

Several other long-standing meet records were bettered yesterday. The boys' Under-18 50m freestyle saw Penang's Alwyn Tan win the gold in a time of 23.85s, erasing the old mark of 24.35s, set in 1997 by Allen Ong of Perak.

The girls' Under-18 200m breaststroke saw Kuala Lumpur's Jing En Jinq En erase Jong Su Ting's (Sarawak) 1990 record of 2:43.88s when she won the gold after clocking 2:42.73s.

The boys' Under-15 200m breaststroke saw Selangor's Ng Yi Hao clinch victory in a record time of 2:27.31s (old record 2:28.50s, Lau Zheng Fong, Perak, 2007).

SWIMMING: Welson Continues To Sizzle

SARAWAK'S very promising Welson Sim bagged his third gold medal at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming championships but more importantly improved on his second personal best time this week.

   The freestyle specialist, who is adept at both short and long distances, powered to gold in the boys' Under-18 100m freestyle clocking a commendable 51.88 seconds at the Shah Alam Aquatics Complex.

   The feat saw him break his own championship record of 52.94s set last year as well as his personal best of 52.21s which he had achieved at the Malaysian Open last season.

   Penang's Alwyn Tan took silver in 52.21s while Selangor's Yeap Zheng Yang finished third, clocking 53.08s.

   Welson, who has made substantial changes to his training regime since late last year, was delighted with his improvement but stressed there is more he wants to achieve in what is his last MSSM outing.

   "My coach Paul Birmingham (national elite coach) texted me to congratulate me on a good job. It feels great to get another PB (personal best) here," said the 17-year-old.

   "I have started to do strength training in the gym for the past four to five months and I believe it has started to pay off for me.

   "I still have the 50m and 400m freestyle events to go. My goal is to win them both and take all the freestyle events here. It would mean a lot to me, especially with this being my last MSSM."

    The Bukit Jalil Sports School student had already secured the 200m and 1,500m freestyle titles earlier this week in record times.

   Although he is not expected to make the Incheon Asian Games or Glasgow Commonwealth Games squads, Welson said he will give qualifying for both his best shot at the upcoming National Age Group Championships and the Malaysian Open which will be held over the next two months.

   More meet records were rewritten in the boys' Under-12 with Sarawak's Adrian Chua clinching the 100m freestyle in 59.27s while Malacca's Low Zheng Yong took the 200m individual medley in 2:29.35s, erasing the previous marks of 1:00.57s and 2:31.07s held by Tang Chong Heng and Eric Chang (both Sarawak) respectively.

   Kuala Lumpur's Wong Tzi Rok also set a new mark of 27.53s (old record of 27.58s set by Ian James Bar, Kuala Lumpur) in the boys' Under-18 50m backstroke while Nadia Adrianna Redza (Selangor) broke Lew Yih Wey's (Negri Sembilan) championship record of  2:24.97s when she won the girls' Under-15 200m individual medley gold in 2:24.57s.

SWIMMING: Quest Begins In Style

MSSM CHAMPIONSHIPS: Siew Hui bags two gold on first day in her target of ten

SELANGOR'S Yap Siew Hui inched closer to her quest of winning 10 titles in this year's MSSM swimming competition by effortlessly racking two gold medals on the opening day at Darul Ehsan Complex in Shah Alam yesterday.

Siew Hui, who won seven titles in last year's edition, set a meet record in the girls' 16-18 age-group 50m butterfly by finishing the race in 28.58 seconds.

The previous record of 29.34 was set by former national swimmer Leung Chii Lin seven years ago.

Sarawak's Leong Wan Ying came in second on 30.36 followed by Kuala Lumpur's Jia Yi (30.94).

However, Siew Hui was not too excited as she failed to surpass her personal best of 27.50 in the event.

The double gold medallist at last year's Islamic Solidarity Games won a second gold by clocking 1:11.76 in the 100m event.

Sarawak's Angela Chieng finished second in 1:13.80 followed by Penang's Heah Zi Xin (1:14.19).

But Angela later gained revenge by overcoming Siew Hui for the 200m freestyle gold.

"I missed training for three weeks in January due to dengue. I was the second member of the national team to get it after coach Paul Birmingham," said Siew Hui yesterday.

"The lay-off did affect my fitness and confidence. I still need to do a lot of work in the pool. It will take some time before I can clock faster times."

The 16-year-old is hoping to use the meet to gain confidence ahead of international meets.

"I do not want to add pressure by setting goals in this meet as I am now competing in a higher category.

"There are many good swimmers here but hopefully, I can win as many titles as possible," said Siew Hui, who has qualified for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing in August.

Christy Teh of Kuala Lumpur was the top performer on the opening day, clinching three titles in the girls' 12-and-under 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 200m freestyle.

KL's Steve Hoe, Penang's Dylan Wong and Selangor's Asmalia Filzati Redzuan were the other double gold medallists.

Sarawak's Welson Sim (boys' 16-18 age-group 200m), Tang Chong Heng (50m) and Angela (girls' open 800m) each set meet records yesterday.

In diving, Selangor's Farez Izzudin garnered 213.95 to bag the boys' 1m springboard gold followed by teammate Ng Zheng Yuan (165.70) and Sarawak's Enrique Maccartney (160.85).

In the girls' category, Sarawak's Kimberly Bong won gold by posting a 169.90 total ahead of compatriot and silver medallist Tracia Irene (146.75) and KL's bronze medallist Ong Ker Ying (145.15).

Angela Chieng of Sarawak won the 200m freestyle gold ahead of Yap Siew Hui.

SWIMMING: Christy Has Big Ambitions

KUALA Lumpur's Christy Teh is a star in the making.

The pint-size swimmer is making heads turn in the ongoing MSSM Championships at Darul Ehsan Complex in Shah Alam.

Christy made her debut last year in the girls' 12-and-under category but managed only one bronze medal.

However, the 12-year-old is making waves in this year's meet with four gold medals so far in her bag.

The Standard Six student with SJKC Yoke Nam recorded a personal best of 1:10.83 seconds to win the 100m butterfly yesterday.

On Monday, Christy claimed three titles with personal best times in the 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle events.

Christy was introduced to swimming by her uncle Alan Tan when she turned four before joining the state team five years later.

"My main event is the backstroke but I've already won two gold in butterfly. I did not have a good debut outing last year but it gave me motivation to train harder," said Christy yesterday.

"I spent hours in the pool to improve my strokes. It has finally paid dividends. I'm swimming in 12 events here but I missed the podium in one race. I hope to win more titles."

Christy hopes she will get spotted soon for a place in the national team.

"My ultimate dream is to represent the country but I know to get there I need to work hard. I am willing to put more hours to achieve my goals," Christy added.

Sarawak's Welson Sim broke his one year old record in the boys' open 1,500m by more than 10 seconds for the gold.

He clocked 16:02.88 to finish ahead of Selangor's Yeap Zheng Yang (16:34.42) and Sarawak's Ngu Jiung Wei (16:53.77).

"I may have broken my own record but I am not happy as my aim was to go under 16 minutes. I am, however, swimming a lot faster since joining the national team a year ago," said Welson, who is competing in nine events.

SARAWAK'S Welson Sim capped a stellar outing at the Malaysian Schools Swimming competition (MSSM) by breaking another two  records on the final day of competition at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Complex in Shah Alam yesterday.

The freestyle specialist surged to the boys' Under-18 400m freestyle gold in a record four minutes and 6.04 seconds, and erased Kevin Yeap's (Perak) old mark of 4:07.33s set in 2006.

Selangor's Yeap Zheng Yang finished second in 4:13.57s while Alex Tiong (Sarawak) clinched bronze with 4:23.47s.

Welson later anchored Sarawak (Alex Tiong, Granvil Ang, Roydon Ong) to the 4x100m freestyle gold, also in record time.

The team clocked 3:41.49s to better the old mark of 3:41.89s set by Federal Territories in 2011 with Selangor (Lim Jie Wen, Tan Yun Hung, Wong Jun Keat, Benny Ng) taking silver in 3:42.27s.

Penang's Yunn Fun Lim, Tian Fu Chin, Ye Xang Soon and Alwyn Tan clinched bronze with 3:43.66s.

Welson, who won a total of seven gold medals at the championships, said the relay victory was the icing on the cake after a highly successful week in Shah Alam.

"It has been a great tournament for me as I felt strong throughout the week," said the 16-year-old.

"We (Sarawak relay team) had expected to win the 4x100 freestyle but to break the record is a great feeling for all of us.

"It (tournament experience) is a positive experience I will look to build on as I believe there is always room to improve myself."

As expected, Welson -- who rewrote five tournament records -- and Selangor's Yap Siew Hui, who bettered four, won the boys' and girls Outstanding Swimmer of the Championships awards respectively.

Meanwhile, Selangor's Rosalind Pang was in equally impressive form when she anchored her team (Lim Chern Xin, Ho Jia Ern, Shannen Kay Chan) to victory in the girls' Under-12 4x50m freestyle and grab her ninth gold medal at the tournament.

Selangor won in a record time of 2:02.61s which erased the old mark of 2:03.35s set by Sabah in 2008.

Sabah (Jenny Ngo, Ilyani Muhamad, Chi Tong Yipp, Cheng Ka Man) finished second in 2:06.81s while Sarawak (Fatin Farahanim, Mandy Teo, Angel Lau, Toh Chieh Ran) took bronze in 2:10.00s.

In water polo, Malacca successfully defended their title when they beat Negri Sembilan 17-9 in the final.

After clinching the swimming title on Thursday, Selangor were crowned the overall MSSM aquatics champions (including results from diving and water polo) with a 42 gold, 37 silver and 16 bronze haul.

Sarawak, last year's swimming champions, finished second with 21 gold, 21 silver and 25 bronze while FT finished third (15-11-10).

Selangor finished with 42 gold, 37 silver and 16 bronze to emerge the overall MSSM aquatics champions.

HAVING clinched their first overall title in more than a decade at the Pahang Malaysia Games last year, Selangor's future in the sport looks set to remain bright after their girls Under-12 and Under-16 relay teams set records in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council swimming championships yesterday.

The Under-12 quartet of Rosalind Pang, Liew Chern Xin, Shannen Kay Chan and Ho Jia Ern shaved over a second off the record of two minutes 17.81 seconds set by Sarawak in 2001 en route to clinching the 4x50m medley relay event gold.

Selangor won in 2:15.84s with Federal Territories (Karla Lim, Christy Teh, Anjali Lim, Pun Pei Jin) finishing second in 2:24.15s. Third were Sabah (Michelle Yong, Jenny Ngo, Ilyani Muhamad, Cheng Ka Man) who clocked 2:26.56s.

The gold in the event was the eighth Rosalind has won at the championships thus far.

The Under-16 team of Yap Siew Hui, Nadia Redza, Asmalia Filzati and Kimberly Ong took the 4x100m medley gold in 4:35.98s to erase the old mark of 4:40.06s set by Sabah in 2004.

FT's Tan Ro Ying, Koh Jia Yi, Cindy Tai and Zoe Bowden clinched silver in 4:40.24s while Penang (Ruth Chuah, Gan Xin Jie, Andrena Soon, Elynn Tan Yilin) had to settle for bronze on 4:49.50s.

Selangor team manager B.H Chin said her charges' exploits in the relay events are a healthy sign for the future of the sport in the state.

"To be honest, we had expected to win both events after comparing our swimmers' times to that of our competitors," said Chin.

"However, we did not expect to set record times and to do so is a great achievement for all the girls who have worked very hard."

With only 12 gold medals on offer on the final day today, Selangor -- whose athletes are coached by former national swimmers Mark and Marilyn Chua -- are now officially overall winners of the swimming competition with an unassailable 33 gold, 29 silver and 14 bronze haul. Sarawak (15-16-18) are second while FT are in third place with 13 gold, 11 silver and eight bronze.

Meanwhile, a fatigued Tia'Faang Der (Johor) did well to rewrite the boys' Under-18 400m individual medley record when he won the event in 4:44.73s to erase the old mark of 4:46.30s set by Selangor's Kevin Lim in 2009.

Second was Sarawak's Alex Tiong (4:52.56s) while Malacca's Foong Wei Yao clinched bronze with 4:57.37s.

Despite the victory, Faang Der -- whose personal best in the event is 4:40.40s -- felt he could have lowered the record even more.

"I felt quite tired after three days of hard swimming here," said the SMK Desa Skudai student.

Sarawak's Welson Sim missed out on a clean sweep of the boys' Under-18 individual freestyle events when he finished fifth in the 50m freestyle.

Penang's Alwyn Tan took gold in 24.64s while Selangor's Benny Ng finished second (24.76s). Perak's Wong Jie clocked 25.05s for the bronze.

In diving, Megan Elizabeth Teoh of Selangor -- who on Tuesday took the 1m springboard gold -- clinched the girls' Under-12 3m springboard title to complete a clean sweep in her age group.

Megan sealed victory with a 200.15 score ahead of Sabah duo Nur Ain Naadzmi (170.15) and Nurfazriyanti Jali (137.25) who finished second and third respectively.

The 12-year-old, who trains under coach Qi Jian Hua of China, said she was delighted with her performance after having to settle for silver and bronze in the 1m and 3m springboard events last year.

Selangor's Ng Zheng Hao, who won the 1m springboard on Wednesday, also notched a double when he took the boys' Under-15 3m springboard gold with a 269.45 score.

Negri Sembilan's Mohd Danial Asyraf (189.60) clinched silver while FT's Abdul Hakim A.Kahar finished third on 62.65.

The boys' Under-18 1m springboard saw Negri's Adzhar Imran Rusli edge Sarawak's Chan Wee Chiek to the gold with a 322.00 score against the latter's 310.90. Third was Sylvester Gaing Peter Jawa who scored 276.50.

The boys' water polo final today will see a repeat of last year's decider after defending champions Malacca and Negri both breezed past their semi-final opponents.

Malacca were rarely tested in their 21-3 win over Selangor while Negri overpowered FT 16-8.
