ELEVEN-year-old Yeong Zhen Yi is a swimming star in the making.
The Year Five pupil of SJK (C) Batu Sebelas Cheras stole the limelight in the Milo-Selangor Schools Sports Council Aquatic championships at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam recently.
In the four-day championships, Zhen Yi won 10 gold medals in the girls’ Under-12 age group. The gold medal haul also earned Zhen Yi the Best Performer award in the girls’ Under-12 age group.
Her impressive performance also contributed to SJK(C) Batu Sebelas becoming the overall champions in the Primary Schools category.
She was naturally happy with her performance and was looking forward to the Milo-Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) swimming championships later this month.
The MSSM championships will be held at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam from March 24-28. She will be taking part in all 10 events.

“I hope to do well in the MSSM swimming championships. It will be an interesting competition. I will get the chance to compete against some of the top swimmers in the age group,’’ said Zhen Yi.
For the jovial Zhen Yi, the season has been a fruitful one. In last month’s Kuala Lumpur age group championships, she won 12 golds — 10 individual and two in the relays — and she is eager to clock faster times in her events in the MSSM meet.
The championships was an exciting affair as several swimmers in the National Back-up squad also made their presence felt.
Yeap Zheng Yang, a student of SMJK Katholik, was voted the Best Performer in the boys’ Under-18 age group as well as Overall Best Swimmer in the boys category.
Zheng Yang won eight gold medals and also created new records in the 100m and 200 freestyle events.
Yap Siew Hui. also a student of SMJK Katholik, was impressive and won 10 gold medals. She also rewrote three meet records — in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events.
For her outstanding performance, Siew Hui was named the Best Performer in the girls Under-18 age group and the overall Best Swimmer in the girls category.
Both Siew Hui and Zheng Yang’s contribution of 18 gold medals made SMJK Katholik the overall champions in the Secondary Schools section.
In the Under-15 age group, Carynn Kay Chan, from Regent International School, was the Best Performer in the girls’ category after winning four gold medals while in the boys’ category, the Best Performer was Sri Cempaka’s Desmond Ng Yi Hao with five gold medals.

Selangor Education Department sport unit’s swimming co-ordinator Wong Yoke Chooi said they were pleased with the overall results of the swimmers.
“Most of them are undergoing training with their respective coaches. We expect them to do well in the MSSM championships.
“We are the defending champions. It will be great if we can retain the overall crown for the second year,” said Yoke Chooi.
In the five team water-polo championships, SMK Kwang Hua became the champions after recording four wins. In second place was Sri Kuala Lumpur followed by SMK Kota Kemuning.
